The Academic Cancer Drug Development –seminar focused on challenges and successes of the translation of basic research into new medicines

Turku Cancer Research Society hosted a day-long seminar with a focus on cancer drug development in an academic setting. The seminar brought together international experts with different aspects on cancer drug development from small-molecule development to clinical trials, and over 200 attendees including academic researchers and scientists from local industries.

A key focus of the seminar was the major challenge of translating the findings of basic research into drug development and innovative medicines that would benefit cancer patients. To overcome this challenge, specific drug development centers providing industry-standard small-molecule development have been founded within academic institutions for example in Belgium and in the U.K.

The seminar also provided exciting views on the recent developments in the discovery of small molecules targeting the ‘undruggable’ cancer targets.
