Instructions for best thesis competition

Turku Cancer Research Society invites applications for the annual PhD Thesis of the Year Award. The purpose of the award is to highlight talented early career researchers and the impact of cancer research conducted in Turku. This year the society will award two theses, one for non-medical researchers and one for medical-clinical researchers.

The prizes (€500 x 2) are funded by the Jalkanen Foundation and Misvik biology and will be presented at the Society’s Christmas Seminar on December 11, 2025, at Säätiö Sali (Medisiina D).

Apply for the award by:

  1. Answering the following link https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/5AC9DF5EB0DA96AF
  2. Send an email containing a (max. one page/PDF) significant statement where you answered to the following questions:
  • What is your contribution to the PhD project?
  • How has your thesis project contributed to the field of cancer?
  • What are the main advances that have emerged from your thesis publications?
  1. Attach a .pdf version of your thesis. If the file is too big, please share the corresponding utupub (UTU) or doria (ÅA) library link.
  2. Send this email to the TCRS secretary’s email mgmcha@utu.fi by November 7, 2025.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. The candidate has received a PhD or an MD-PhD degree from University of Turku or Åbo Akademi University between 1.7.2024 and 30.6.2025
  2. The subject of the thesis is related to prevention, treatment, diagnosis or biology of cancer
  3. The candidate is member of the Turku Cancer Research Society (Paid annual fee)
  4. The decisions will be based on the scientific impact of the research and the academic quality of the literature review. Evaluation of the scientific impact is based on the whole thesis and not the impact factors of journals where the original research was published. The selection of the winners will be performed by the Turku Cancer Research Society board. The Society’s board members involved in the research of the candidate theses will not participate in the selection process.
  5. Important! The award will be presented in the Society’s Christmas Seminar event on December 11, 2025. The recipient of the award will be invited to give a short talk in the seminar. The talk must be given by a co-author if the recipient of the award is unable to attend.
